About Computer Crimes
The most basic definition of a computer crime is something occurring that would be considered a crime on its own, but in this case is done with the use of a computer. Many times computer crimes involve the Internet, but that does not always have to be the case. A person intentionally accessing private data from a computer without authorization is committing a computer crime, whether or not the crime was committed on that computer directly or across the Internet. Some common computer crimes include:
- Theft of technology
- Internet phishing scams
- Unauthorized computer access (hacking)
- Identity theft
Penalties for Computer Crimes in Minnesota
Two common and broad computer crimes in Minnesota are computer damage and computer theft. These crimes are penalized based on the monetary value of damage done:
- Less than $500 damage—up to 90 days in jail, up to $1,000 fine, or both
- Between $500-$2,500 damage—up to 5 years in prison, up to a $10,000 fine, or both
- Over $2,500 damage—up to 10 years in prison, up to a $50,000 fine, or both
